thanks to jim i had the opportunity to work in jim's campaign and go to washington and then jim let me come back here in 1976. to get around and to know people. it was 1977, i hadn't yet announced -- it was at the state fair. the country was consumed and a raging debate about the panama canal treaties. as we were walking down the fairway, if very angry crowd encircled george demanding that he explain his position on those treaties and change it. and that they would work hard to defeat him in the next election and they didn't. george stood there and listened to them quietly. when it was his time to talk in a most recent come and articulate way, he shared with that group why those treaties were not only good for panama but what they meant for us. the crowd dissipated and as we walked back to the democratic booth, i remarked to george. i said george, i can't help but note the contrast between that angry crowd and what you just did. he said, i have learned a long time ago that it's a whole lot better to tell people what you believe from here than to tell them what you think they want to he
